FAQ

Questions, answered.

What it works with, what your customers see, how secure it is and what each plan includes. If your question is not here, email us and a person who built it will answer.

The basics

What is the Waveform License Manager?

A hosted licensing service for people who sell software. The moment an order is paid, your store issues a signed license key, emails it to the buyer and saves it to the order. Your software checks that key, on the customer's machine or against our API, and a refund, cancellation or chargeback revokes it automatically.

Which stores does it work with?

WooCommerce and other WordPress stores use the Waveform plugin. Shopify stores install the app from the Shopify App Store. Both issue keys from the same service, so you can run a store on each at once, or move from one to the other, without reissuing a single key.

What kinds of software can I license?

Anything you can write code for. Audio plugins, sample libraries and desktop apps usually check offline, on the customer's machine. Web apps, SaaS, APIs, WordPress plugins and online games usually check online, against the API. The use cases page walks through seventeen of them.

Do I need to write code?

Not for the store. Your software does need a license check. The JUCE kit gives audio plugins a finished activation screen, the TypeScript SDK covers web and Electron apps, and every other language talks to the plain REST API. If you would rather hand it over, we can build it in for you.

Is there an SDK for my language?

There is a JUCE kit for C++ audio plugins and a TypeScript SDK for Node, Electron and the web. Everything else uses the REST API, which needs nothing more than an HTTP client. The offline token is a standard Ed25519 signature, and the docs show how to check it with the built-in or mainstream libraries for .NET, Swift, Python, Go, Rust, PHP and Kotlin.

Your customers

How do my customers get their key?

It is emailed to them the moment the order is paid, saved to the order, and listed on a My Licenses page in their account, where they can see every key they own. On paid plans the email carries your own branding.

Do customers need an internet connection?

Not for an offline product. The customer activates once, and from then on the key is checked on their machine at every launch with no network call. Whenever they are online the license renews quietly in the background. On the default settings that means weeks without a connection: 30 days with the JUCE kit, and never more than 44 days (a 30-day lease plus 14 days of grace) with any client. You can choose a shorter offline window.

Online products, such as web apps and APIs, check with the server on every use by design.

What happens when a customer gets a new computer?

They release the old machine from their My Licenses page and activate on the new one, with no support email needed. If they cannot reach the old machine, your support team can release a seat or grant an extra activation straight from the order.

How many computers can one key run on?

You choose, per product. When a customer reaches the limit, the next machine is turned away with a clear message until they free one up. The limit is enforced on our server, where a patched copy of your software cannot change it.

Can I offer a free demo or trial?

Yes. A product can offer a demo of a length you set, and a paid key takes over the moment the customer buys. The JUCE kit's activation screen has a start-demo button built in. Demos get no offline grace, so they end on time.

Will an outage on your side lock my customers out?

Not an offline product. A failed connection never counts as a failed license: the stored license keeps working and the check is tried again later, until its lease and grace run out. Only a clear answer from the server, such as revoked or expired, stops it.

For an online product you decide in your own code whether to let people in while the API cannot be reached. Live health is on the status page.

What happens to a key when I refund an order?

It is revoked automatically, with no manual cleanup. An online product is refused at its next request. An offline product stops at its next check-in, and at the latest when its lease and grace run out. A partial refund revokes only the items that were refunded.

Security

Can my software be cracked?

Honestly, yes. Anyone with enough time can patch a program that runs on their own computer, and every offline licensing scheme is eventually beaten that way. What we do is make it cost more: signed keys that cannot be forged, machine binding, leases a cracked copy cannot renew, and limits held on our server. Online mode leaves nothing on the device to patch. How it all fits together.

Can someone build a key generator?

No. Every license is backed by an Ed25519 signature made with a private key that never leaves our servers. Your software holds only the public half, which can check a signature but cannot make one.

What do you collect about my customers' computers?

To bind a license to a machine, your software sends a salted hash of the computer's machine ID, never the ID itself. Each product uses its own salt, so the same computer looks different to every product. For delivery we keep what the order provides, such as the buyer's email address. The Privacy Policy has the details.

Who holds the signing keys?

We create a signing keypair for your account. The private half is stored encrypted and is only ever used on our servers. The public half is shown on your Integration page for you to build into your software. Keys can be rotated without breaking installed copies, as long as a build that accepts the new key ships first.

Plans and billing

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Free covers 1 product and 50 active licenses, with offline and online modes and email delivery. When you outgrow it, the upgrade keeps your key, products and licenses. See every plan.

What counts as an active license?

A license that has not been revoked. Keys revoked by a refund, cancellation or chargeback do not count toward your plan.

Is there a free trial of the paid plans?

Yes, 14 days on every paid plan.

How does billing work?

Pay monthly, or yearly for two months free. Shopify stores are billed through their Shopify bill. Stores outside Shopify are billed by Paddle, our merchant of record, which handles the payment, sales tax and invoices. The plans and prices are the same either way.

What happens if I cancel?

Your account goes back to Free. Your key, products and licenses stay exactly as they were, and the licenses your customers already hold keep working. Only the Free limits apply to new products.

Uninstalling the Shopify app is different: Shopify asks apps to erase a store's data 48 hours after it is uninstalled, so we email you a full export of your licenses first.

What if I sell more than 15,000 licenses?

Pro includes 15,000 active licenses. Beyond that we set up an Enterprise plan for your volume, priced to fit and agreed up front, with unlimited licenses and products. Talk to us about Enterprise.

Do you offer refunds?

The Refund Policy covers trials, refunds and canceling for plans bought at waveformanager.com. Shopify charges follow Shopify's billing.

Switching

Can I move from another licensing plugin?

Yes, and without asking customers for anything. The WooCommerce plugin has a migration mode that runs beside your current plugin and reuses the keys it issues. The switching guide has the whole plan.

Can my existing customers keep their keys?

Yes. Licenses you sold before the switch can be brought across with their original keys, so a customer types the key they already have. A key needs at least 16 letters and digits to carry over; anything shorter gets a fresh key instead. We run the import with you, so it is done once and checked.

Can I move between WooCommerce and Shopify?

Yes. Both stores issue keys from the same account for the same product, so keys already in customers' hands stay valid, and your software cannot tell which store made the sale.

Is the license format proprietary?

No. The token format and every verification rule are published, so you can read exactly what your software checks and write a verifier in any language.

Can you set it all up for us?

Yes. We plan the setup, connect your store, integrate your software, test it end to end on your real build and hand it over. We can harden your product against cracking too. See Services.
